Assault Style Weapons Ban & The Second Amendment

Introduction:

The sound of a gun is something most of us don't want to hear in our lifetime. The tragedy to see our young people perish at the hands of a mentally unstable person, has touched our hearts deeply. Very few countries allow their people the right to bare arms as freely as in the United States. Guns are considered by many as evil and immoral. In the United States, it is not unusual to wake up to the tragedy of another school shooting. It is a detestable feeling to be powerless watching as many pure, young, and innocent lives are taken away by these guns. These events have ignited a huge debate about our second amendment. One section of the population is asking for gun regulation, while other section of the population is worried about government over reach.

There is one thing in common that most people would agree on; that is that we must avoid gun tragedies as much as possible. Our laws already make gun dealers, importers and manufactures run background checks on the transfer of firearms. However, that has done little to stop people from getting their hands on assault style weapons. Lots of movements, as well as business support, have emerged to push for gun reform. An example of these movements is called "the March for Our Lives" that started when high school students come together after their school was targeted by a shooter.

The mass murderers often inspire other mentally unstable and evil people to commit the most heinous acts. The price of freedom has cost us many lives, but are we really willing to give up the right to self preservation? The debate rages on.

Democrat/Left view

Do you remember the lazy and fun days you had when you were a kid. The worry free moments we all enjoyed in our infancy. Do you remember that particular smell of paper and ink that filled the classrooms in our schools. When the only time your heart would race is when you realized that you forgot to do that project or some math homework. In 2020 our kids have no longer those worries, instead they worry about the siren signaling a drill to duck under their desk. The schools are preparing them for a worst case scenario in which there is an active shooter roaming the hallways. Guns provide important protection for you and your loved ones, but they don't belong at schools or any other place where children study and play.

While guns ownership is one of the fundamentals rights, we must implement heavy regulations to stop this massacres from happening. Stricter background check should be put in place to avoid the mentally unstable from purchasing guns. We should reexamine the use of semi automatic weapons. Weapons are far more powerful now than they were at the time the constitution and amendments were written. The times have changed, so our laws should too. How many more young kids lives must we lost before we act?

Most countries around the world recognize the dangers of guns in the wrong hands. In nations that completely banned guns, the amount of deaths by firearms have decreased tremendously. We should look to other countries for tips on how to avoid mass shootings here in the United States.

Republic/Right view

The second amendment was designed to spread the concentration of power among the citizens of the United States. The founders of the constitution understood how an unarmed population is an easy target to dominate. All of the freedom that we all posses and love is directly protected by the right to bear arms. While this concept of government totalitarianism might seem foreign to many young people in the United States, it is of extreme importance if we want to maintain the balance of power.

We often complain about the evil actions of few evil humans. The left and the media often try manipulate our emotions with the goal of demonizing fire weapons. In reality guns represent power and depending on who wills it, it can be used to achieve great good or great evil. In the hands of evil people this instrument can be used to kill, dominate and subjugate peoples. However, in the hands of good people, these guns can be used to protect and keep the peace in our society. Since the dawn of the Cold War, we have been slipping more and more into the notion that concentrating power in the government is a good idea. The misery that every society suffers, every time they give up the little power the citizens have and concentrate it into a government, is immense.

Have you noticed that most shooters target gun free zones and other vulnerable places? Shooters know very well that no one can stop them at places where people don't have the means to fight back. If we want to avoid more tragedies at schools, we must have weapon trained personnel protecting our learning institutions and other vulnerable places.

Conclusion:

It is clear that we can't get rid of guns and violate the constitution of the United States. However, we need to find the solution to mass shootings. The best strategy is to understand our enemy, the shooters and their psychology. There are many different types of motives: some are religious, others are hate crimes. Lately, many mass shootings have been planned and plotted online or using technology. There have been several plans thwarted thanks to threats being reported and investigated by local and federal police. There is no clear solution to the gun problem in the United States. On one hand, many people wish for stricter laws on the type of weapons available to the common public. On the other hand, it is founded in our constitution and people are not willing to, nor should they be forced to, give up their constitutional right. Since there is no end all solution in sight, we must all do our best to make a difference by reporting any suspicious behavior or threats that we come into contact with online or out in the public. Additionally, we could create both online/traditional bounty reward systems. We could encourage ex-military, ex-law enforcement and veterans to go into a new business model where their tracking and weapon skills could be used to better society.
